IUI Treatment

INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI) is a simple ART procedure used for treating infertility in which semen handling is done outside your body by expert gynecologist and rest of the process involved in pregnancy like ovulation, fertilization, embryo formation and implantation takes place naturally. IUI is extension of natural conception. The main principle behind IUI is to increase the gamete density at fertilization site.

In SARVODAYA HOSPITAL AND TEST TUBE BABY CENTRE sperm preparation is done by our expert and highly experienced embryologist and IUI id done by trained and experienced fertility specialist. We have performed about 3000 IUI cycles in last 5 years with success rate of around 15-20/ cycle with advances in the stimulation protocols, cycle monitoring, timing of ovulation, semen preparation method and luteal phase support.

WHAT IS IUI?

In IUI, Sperms are washed, concentrated and prepared to place them directly into your uterus around the time of ovulation (when your ovaries release eggs) in a hope that these sperms will swim into the fallopian tube and fertilize the waiting egg and eventually lead to pregnancy.

WHEN IS IUI DONE ?

Ability of a couple to get pregnancy depends on many different factors. IUI can be used in couples who have

  1. Male factor subfertility – When there is defect in quality, numbers, weak motility or abnormality in the size and shape (morphology) of your partner’s semen. In IUI these semen problems get corrected because by preparing semen, high quality sperm with high motility and normal morphology is separated.
  2. Cervical factor infertility - when your cervix ( lower end of uterus) produces mucus during the time of ovulation, it provides an ideal environment for sperm to travel from your vagina to the fallopian tube.

  3. But what if it’s too thick, it will act as a barrier to the sperm journey. It will inhibit sperm to travel to uterus, fallopian tube and reach the egg. IUI procedure bypasses the cervix and helps in direct deposition of sperms into your uterus and also increases the number of sperms available for fertilizing the egg.

  4. Endometriosis – using medications to obtain a good quality of egg along with doing IUI is often the first line treatment approach
  5. Ovulatory factor - women with problems in ovulation like anovulation (absence of ovulation) or with reduced ovarian reserve in these women. IUI can be done with ovulation induction.
  6. Donor sperm - In women with husband semen azoospermia , IUI can be done using donor sperm to get pregnancy. Frozen donor sperms are obtained from certified labs / sperm banks and are thawed before IUI procedure.
  7. Unexplained infertility - IUI is performed as a first line of management in couples with unexplained infertility with ovulation induction medicines

COMPLICATIONS FROM IUI-

As IUI is safe, simple, easy and least invasive procedure the risk of complcations is very low. With proper technique complications can be avoided. Though complications are uncommon there can be pain, infection, or bleeding.

HOW MANY IUI CYCLES SHOULD BE PERFORMED

3-6 cycles of IUI can be performed with maximum success rate is seen in first 3 IUI cycles.
